2 important points behind one of golf’s best putters

When you think of smooth transitions in today’s generation, a few words immediately come to mind. Ernie Els, a couple of Fred, Adam Scott and Justin Rose are all strong nominees, but the list wouldn’t be complete without one: Louis Oosthuizen.

Like other names on the modern Mount Rushmore of motion pictures, Oosthuizen is a master; lifted the Claret Jug at St Andrews in 2010 and beat the field by seven shots. He came close a few more times, too, famously scoring three points in a big 2021 season.

Since then, the South African has honed his skills on the LIV Golf circuit, and although he has yet to lift the trophy on his first tour, his swing is still as impressive as ever.

Recently, Oosthuizen joined GOLFby Dylan Dethier in the Warming Up episode (which you can watch in full below). During their talk, he explained the origin of his smooth skating.

2 bases for smooth transitions

The basics aren’t the most fun things to work on, but they are the foundation of any good swing. Need proof? Look no further than Mr. Oosthuizen — and the constant numbers he packed into our Full Swing simulator.

“From Day 1 when I started when I was young, I went to the coach and he was good in terms of setting and standing,” said Oosthuizen. “Those were the things we were working on and everything was always close to square one.”

Strong basics can cover many physical deficiencies. Even if you are not the tallest, biggest or strongest player, if you have a strong base, you can generate a lot of power. Moving your body in the right direction can go a long way.

“Time and good skills,” said Oosthuizen when asked where he gets his energy from. “When I was young, because I was young, I didn’t have the strength so I had a lot of power, I had a long swing, and over the years when I got a little stronger, I could control that. But it was always aiming good square, just to the left of the target, maybe, and working in the open. It wasn’t really something I had to do in my swing to try to do anything decent.

If you struggle to generate energy or create a strong connection, separate it from the priorities. Chances are that by making small adjustments, you’ll put yourself in a much better position to swing like a pro.
