NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers May Look for New Home for Andrew Mangiapane

Andrew Mangiapane’s role has been reduced, and a change of location may be welcome

Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – Roster Shakeups Around the NHL episode, on Edmonton Oilers forward Andrew Mangiapane. The Oilers are getting healthy, and AHL players Isaac Howard and Quinn Hutson are playing well and could end up being recalled. Mangiapane’s ice time has been dwindling, and the tie has not been what both sides had hoped. You have a no-trade rule, but a change of location is welcome.

“So we’re in a situation where there’s going to be more bodies. And I understand that one of the names that will probably be affected by this is Andrew Mangiapane. And you know, Mangiapane started the year in a big role, and lately, he’s had trouble getting both ice time and consistency.

NHL Injuries: Ducks, Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Islanders, Penguins, Sharks, Blues, Mammoths and Jets

In the last 10 games, he has scored three of them in less than 10 minutes. In fact, he only got three games where he played more than 11 games. You got 11:41, you got 12:16 in those five wins you mentioned in Calgary, and you got 13:02. That’s the most in his last 10 games in Toronto, where the Oilers won the game you mentioned.

So Mangiapane practiced in Winnipeg on Sunday, on the fourth row. The Oilers play the Jets on Monday night. And we’ve seen a few trades recently, Kyle, where the players, their situations weren’t working. Phillip Danault was one in LA. Mason Marchment was one in Seattle. And the Kraken, now 4-0. You know, they are, that someone has sewn them up. But those were the players who were treated because, look, it wasn’t working out, and you try to move on and find a better situation.

Now, Mangiapane has a no-trade clause this year. He doesn’t have a full trade until, I believe, mid-June. But I think there is an understanding there that if the Oilers can get something out of Mangiapane with another team, where he can have a bigger role, he would be willing to step away from that situation.

So again, it’s one of these things. I don’t think it’s like a hard and fast commercial requirement or anything like that, but I think there’s a realization that, like Danault, like Marchment, it wasn’t working in that area. And if another situation can be found, I think Mangiapane would be willing to look into it.

So we’ll see where that grows over the next few days. But much of this is driven by the fact that Edmonton is finally getting healthy, and Howard and Hutson are lighting it up. And in that case, there will be guys who have to stay. We will be left, a little time for other guys, and I think Mangiapane is one of those who may be moved to open up places. We’ll see how it goes.”

Kyle Bukauskas: “So you believe there can be a willingness on both sides to look and understand that maybe a fresh start is best here?”

NHL Rumors: There May Be Fewer Trades Than We Think

Friedman: “Yes, I think both sides would be willing in the right situation. Yes.”
