The Philadelphia Flyers are talking to two pending free agents about contract extensions

Kyle Bukauskas: “Okay, Elliotte, the Philadelphia Flyers. So they were part of your headlines on Saturday, including names like Christian Dvorak, Egor Zamula. We can throw Trevor Zegras into that conversation, too. What do you all have on the Flyers front?”
Friedman: “Well, I got a few DMs from Flyers fans, and I think there was this feeling on social media, you can’t keep track of everything. But I got a few DMs from Flyers fans that were really mad. It’s like, this is not Flyers news that we want to hear.
And they say we want to hear about Zegras extensions, not so much about Dvorak. And you know, Dvorak is like a little old institution. You know, we shouldn’t extend that guy. We should be taking care of Zegras. Why, why aren’t they trying to extend Zegra? And I was like, OK, you guys need a chill pill. Like, you guys should calm down. Life is not like that.

I think I’ve written before, in the past, about how the marriage between the Flyers and Zegras is going well, and Dvorak and Zegras worked very well together.
And of course, they will try to expand Zegras. I’m sure they’re talking about it, but I believe they’re talking about it. I think I’ve said that before. Just because, you know, people can do more than one thing at a time.
The Dvorak thing is interesting because, and I think the reason it came up now, like I said, when you sign a one-year deal like Dvorak did, the earliest you can extend a player is January 1st. So this time of year, I usually check, and say, okay, like there are guys signing one-year deals. Are they going anywhere?
But the other reason I really found out about this is that people are trying to find institutions out there. Like, look, LA just traded for Phillip Danault, and you know, they talked about maybe a guy like (Samuel) Helenius getting more of a chance. Well, he doesn’t play much, they are looking for a center again.
And I think a lot of teams are out there looking for guys. And Dvorak is an obvious name. He has a one-year contract. Are you available? And then I found out, I heard from a couple of places that it was like suggesting to them that Philly was going to sign him, and the player wanted to stay, so they were probably going to work something out.
Now, the key phrase I mentioned, is, it has to work for both sides. And that’s what I said on Saturday night. And I think there’s some logic here in terms of, you know, what Philly wants to do and what the player wants. There I think both sides are trying to find the sweet spot, and that’s what they’re trying to do.

But I think at the end of the day, he’s been great for Philly. He was good, it was good for him. And I think, but, I think Philly is trying to be smart about what they’re doing.
So we will see how it all works. Like, I guess, if there’s a will, there’s a way. It is clear that there is a will. And, again, both sides, I think, will create. But the thing is, that some groups believe that Dvorak will fix something there. We will see. He was really good there. But yes, I still think they will work on Zegras again.”
