Ruben Amorim sends a warning to the Man United board after the Leeds draw

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has sent shockwaves through Old Trafford following a rare post-match press conference.

After watching his side draw 1-1 with Leeds United on Sunday, the Portuguese tactician moved away from a tactical talk to deliver a “bombshell” speech about his tenure, his contract and his future at the club.

With the January transfer window open, it seems that the tension between the dugout and the boardroom has come to a head.

The atmosphere became electric when Ruben Amorim was asked about his relationship with the Man United team, especially Director of Football Jason Wilcox and the scouting department.

Amorim, who was appointed with the title of “Head Coach” in late 2024, rejected the label defending his role.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United… not to be the coach of Manchester United.

“I know my name is wrong [Thomas] Tuchel, it’s not [Antonio] Conte, it’s not [Jose] Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United and it will be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change.

“That was my intention [on Friday] and I want to end with that. I will not stop. I will do my job until another guy comes to replace me.

Amorim has made it clear here that he will do things his way as long as he is still in this team, stating that he is determined to stick to the form he likes.

He went on to say: “I want to say that I am going to be the MANAGER of this team, not just a coach and I was clear about that.

“And that will end in 18 months and then everyone will move on. It was an agreement, that’s my job … not to be a coach.

Amorim went further, focusing on the team’s recruitment process and “selective details” leaked to the media.

He emphasized that every department, from the scout to the sports director, must “do their job” while he focused on his.

The rant, which lasted several minutes, saw the 40-year-old address Gary Neville and other critics, suggesting that if the club can’t withstand external pressure, “we have to change the club.”

“If people can’t stand Gary Nevilles, the criticism, everything, we have to change the club. I want to say that.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be a coach.

“In every department, the inspection department, the sports director must do his job, I will do mine for 18 months and we will continue.”

Will Amorim stay at Man United this season?

The most frightening aspect of Amorim’s outburst was his repeated reference to the 18-month timeline.

Having said several times that he will finish his job 18 months before “everyone else moves on,” he has set an expiration date on his job, which is currently scheduled to last until June 2027.

While he clarified, “I’m not going to quit,” the suggestion that he and the club will part ways at the end of the 2026/27 season has left fans and pundits wondering if the relationship with INEOS is beyond repair.

With United currently 5th in the Premier League and struggling for consistency, a bombshell interview from Amorim will make waves behind the scenes.
