Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given a major update on the future of Mathys Tel, revealing that the Frenchman could be looking at the exit door at Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Although he arrived with high expectations, the 20-year-old is said to be frustrated by his lack of regular game time under manager Thomas Frank.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that Tel is willing to leave North London, on loan or permanently, if his condition does not improve quickly.

The reason for this possible move is Tel’s “single dream”: to represent the French National team in the upcoming World Cup.

“Mathys Tel is an important talent and he joined Tottenham almost a year ago in January 2025. Now what will happen? Mathys Tel has one dream: to go to the World Cup with the French national team. Mathy Tel wants to play, he wants to play regularly, he wants to feel important.

“So the message that comes from Mathys Tel to Tottenham says ‘if I don’t play here, I’m ready to go on loan. I’m ready to go (permanent)’.

“So at this stage from Tottenham, the aim is to keep the player and make Mathys Tel one of the important players in the club in the second half of the season.

“But on the player’s side, he will follow this situation closely in the following days and weeks because if he does not play, if he does not feel important during the regular game, Mathys Tel may consider leaving Tottenham in the January transfer window.

Mathys Tel attracts singles from France

Ambitious Ligue 1 side Paris FC are reportedly leading the race to bring Tel back to France on loan.

Interest is also high in Germany, where Tel previously played for Bayern Munich, with several other Premier League clubs eyeing the situation.

Speaking about Tel’s potential suitors, Romano continued:

“There are several teams in several countries interested in signing him. In England, Germany he played with Bayern and in France to return to the French Ligue 1. For example Paris FC, they are really serious in the market and would like to sign Tel on loa. But at this stage, the message from Tottenham is clear: they have not given the green light.”

Mathys Tel’s time at Tottenham has been so far since his departure

Mathys Tel’s journey at N17 began in January when he joined on loan from Bayern Munich.

After showing a brilliant light, Tottenham started an indefinite option of $ 30 million in the summer of 2025.

However, the 2025/26 campaign has been a struggle for the versatile striker.

Despite a stunning goal in the recent 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, Tel has had a difficult start, often used as a late substitute.

With the January transfer window open, the disagreement between the player’s World Cup ambitions and the club’s desire for squad depth is reaching its peak.
