Michael Carrick plans to reset Man United’s strategy in the Manchester derby

All eyes will be on Old Trafford this Saturday as Michael Carrick begins his second spell at Manchester United with the final stress test, the Manchester derby against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Tasked with halting a rapidly unraveling season, Carrick is expected to make immediate tactical changes after taking over from Ruben Amorim.
Despite having a few training sessions to work with a low-confidence team, early signs suggest the incumbent is ready to make a decisive move away from the system that failed under his predecessor.

Carrick’s willingness to change formation so quickly underlines the urgency of United’s situation.
The back three of Amorim’s tenure have failed to provide solid defense or control of the pitch, and with hopes of a top four fading, Carrick appears determined to restore balance rather than continue down a flawed path.
The most significant change expected in Saturday’s line-up is a return to the back four.
During his spell at Middlesbrough, Carrick favored a fluid 4-2-3-1, a formation that suits United’s current staff much better than the previous formation.
Lammens will keep his place in goal, but the defense protecting him has been restructured.
Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw are expected to act as traditional defenders, alongside the partnership between Harry Maguire and Lisandro MartÃnez.
In midfield, Carrick is likely to prioritize control and may bring back Kobbie Mainoo to the team, who struggled for game time under Ruben Amorim.
He can play in the middle of a two-man midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte. This double pivot will free up captain Bruno Fernandes to return to his preferred number 10 role, freeing him from the defensive burdens of the previous system.
On the wings, the speed of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha will be important compared to the attackers, while Benjamin Sesko, who scored his goals in the Amorim area, is expected to lead the way.

Carrick says he knows what it takes to succeed at Man United
Speaking at his presentation, the new caretaker manager expressed both optimism and defiance.
Acknowledging the weight of the task ahead, Carrick emphasized his deep connection to the club’s DNA.
“To be responsible for leading Manchester United is an honour,” said Carrick. “I know what it takes to be successful here; now I’m focused on helping the players reach the levels we expect from this amazing team, which we know this team has the potential to produce.”
Carrick also dismissed suggestions he would need time to learn the squad, pointing to his previous coaching role at Carrington. “I’ve worked with a number of players and obviously I’ve continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I absolutely believe in their talents, commitment and ability to succeed here.”
With the top four drifting out of sight, Carrick’s final message was a rallying cry for many supporters. “We still have a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to bring everyone together and give the fans games that deserve their loyal support.”
