Final hole stumble costs Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry Dubai wins

In the final moments of the 2026 Dubai Invitational, both Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry seem poised for a legendary win to start the year in pro golf. That is until each player reaches the final challenge.
With victory in their sights, both McIlroy and Lowry bogeyed the 72nd hole to miss out on a dream start in 2026.
Here is what happened.
Rory McIlroy’s epic rally was marred by a bogey at the Dubai Invitational
Going into Sunday’s final round, McIlroy was three shots off the lead and hungry to start his year with a bang. An early birdie on the 3rd hole helped his case, but then things went sideways for the five-time major champion.
Bogeys at 4 and 7 dropped McIlroy to 4 under for the tournament and the lead. It looked like he would have to finish in the top-10 after all.

However, the World No. 2 continued one of his hot trademarks to change the narrative completely. Rory made five straight birdies on holes 9-13 to move up the leaderboard to a 9-under lead.
With five holes remaining, McIlroy was atop the leaderboard with Daniel Hiller and 54-hole leader Nacho Elvira. Lowry shot one back to eight under.
On the par-3 14th, McIlroy watched in dismay as his 30-foot birdie putt tried to burn the edge of the cup, forcing him to chip in for par. Had his putt fallen, it would have extended his birdie streak to six straight holes and given him a solo lead with four to play.
By the time McIlroy reached the watery par-4 18th hole at Dubai Creek Resort, he was nine under and tied with Elvira and Hiller. But Lowry jumped ahead at 10 under.
However, with a birdie at the end, his feat in Round 1, McIlroy could have set himself up for a playoff. But the hardest hole on the course proved too much.
McIlroy lost his drive behind a palm grove and almost went into the lake. His second shot landed in the back of the greenside bunker. He missed to 15 feet, then missed his par-saving putt.
An unfortunate bogey dropped McIlroy to eight under and out of contention.
But the drama was far from over.
Shane Lowry faces disaster on the 18th hole to lose the Dubai Invitational
When McIlroy walked off the 18th green after his disappointing finish, things were looking good for Lowry, McIlroy’s friend and European Ryder Cup teammate.
Starting the final round two shots back, the 2019 Open champion birdied three of his first four holes to place himself near the top of the leaderboard.
A birdie on the par-5 13th hole moved Lowry into a tie for the lead with McIlroy, Elvira and Hiller at 9 under.
Then at 15, Lowry holed a 27-foot birdie putt that moved him into the lead at 10 under.
That lead held all the way to the 18th tee, when Lowry, close enough to taste victory, pulled his drive into the fairway. When McIlroy made bogey in front of him, Lowry’s chances looked even better.
But then disaster struck. Lowry’s approach shot went too long and ended up in the same spot as Rory had moments before. His bunker shot bounced back over the green and into the water, resulting in a penalty stroke.
Lowry ended up double-bogeying 6, dropping him to eight under (T3) with McIlroy and losing the lead entirely.
Soon after, Elvira birdied 17 to take the lead at 10 under and closed with a strong par to win.
For Elvira, it represents her third DP World Tour stage victory and her first since 2024.
