Should he stay or go?

The January 2026 transfer window produced one of the most explosive news in recent years: Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s talisman, is reportedly unhappy.
Despite signing a massive contract extension until 2033 last season, rumors of homesickness and a dramatic return to the North West have reached fever pitch.
With reports suggesting Manchester United are considering a record-breaking £120m bid, and Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior fighting to keep his star man, Palmer faces a career-defining decision.
Current Status: Statistics and Struggles
After a Ballon d’Or-worthy performance in 2023/24 where he racked up more than 40 goal contributions, Palmer’s 2025/26 campaign has been hit hard.
Hampered by a groin injury early in the season and a change under Rosenior, Palmer has managed 10 goals in 17 starts this season.
Although these numbers are respected by many, they represent a dip in the external standards he has previously set.
Option 1: Dream Move to Manchester United
This is the author of the article. Palmer grew up supporting the Red Devils, and with United reportedly “thriving” under interim manager Michael Carrick, the lure of Old Trafford is stronger than ever.
Why it makes sense:
Home Comfort: The move to Manchester solves the reported “homesickness” instantly, bringing him back closer to his family in Wythenshawe.
Tactical Fit: United’s current side has been praised for its versatility. Palmer could step in as the main creator, possibly viewing himself as a long-time successor to Bruno Fernandes.
“Main Person” Status.: United are keen on a young British star. Palmer has the ego and ability to handle that pressure.
Risk: A £120m price tag will bring unimaginable scrutiny. Also, negotiating sales between these two fierce rivals is historically difficult; Chelsea will not want to strengthen direct rivals in the top four.
Option 2: Return to Manchester City
Narration: Returning to the Etihad to prove a point to the club that sold him.
The truth: Sources indicate that this is unlikely to happen. Reports suggest Palmer “wouldn’t be happy” to return to City while Pep Guardiola is in charge. The bridge seems to have burned, or at least burned a lot, with his first outing. City’s prolific midfielder also gives no assurances about the “sweet” role he is currently enjoying.
Option 3: Staying in Chelsea
Narration: Trust the process. Palmer is under contract with Chelsea until 2033.
Why it makes sense:
Stability: Liam Rosenior says publicly that Palmer is “important” to the project and is “excited” despite the rumors.
The project: Chelsea built the entire attack around him. Walking now, between temporary dips in form and fitness, can be seen as running into battle.
Legacy: If he leads Chelsea back to Premier League glory, he becomes a club legend forever.
What Should He Do?

Palmer should stay at Chelsea and cement his status as one of the club’s modern day stars.
They have invested time and money in him and now it is up to him to get his club back.
Man United, despite looking good at the moment, are a very inconsistent team and it remains to be seen who their new head coach will be.
Chelsea are very stable, have shown progress recently by winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup and have shown a desire in the market to improve the team.
