Brooks Koepka makes a rare putter switch. Here’s how that happened
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Brooks Koepka just wanted to put the ball in the hole, and that led to the most remarkable gear change of the five-time major champion’s career.
After more than a decade playing a Scotty Cameron Teryllium blade, Koepka made a last-minute switch to the new TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-neck this week at the WM Phoenix Open.
Koepka, playing his second event this week since returning to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf, was looking for the green at Torrey Pines last week. Last in the field in Strokes Earned: Ranking among those who made the cut. He lost more than seven strokes on the green in three rounds with Shot Link Data.
To help out, Koepka actually visited the Scotty Cameron Gallery in nearby Encinitas over the weekend to have a practice session with Scotty Cameron’s director of Player Fitting and Development, Paul Vizanko.
Koepka and Vizanko were at it again Monday at TPC Scottsdale, working long hours to put Koepka.
“I’m trying to put the ball in the hole,” Koepka said bluntly Wednesday of Monday’s session. “Yeah, like, I just never felt comfortable because of the ball. You have to make everything square as far as you’re directed. Just working on things like that. Really simple things, the setup. The shoulders were open. My feet are always a little bit open, but I’m just trying to minimize the lines that cross too much.
“I’ve been putting too much on the good side for two years. I don’t know what’s going on, but I have to figure it out.”

What was not seen on Monday and even during Wednesday’s pro-am is that there was a change that was imminent. Koepka had four putters on Monday: his player Scotty Cameron T22 Teryllium Newport 2, a matching spare and two TaylorMade Spider Tour X irons. One Spider had a short slant pipe and the other had an L neck like his Camerons.
Koepka has used the T22 for the better part of the past five years, starting in 2020, shortly after the model was released in late 2019 as a tribute to Scotty Cameron’s first Teryllium putters. It replaced the T10 Newport 2 that dates back to Koepka’s college days at Florida State and features a button-back design, as opposed to silicone dots to hold inserts in place.
He’s played with blades before, most notably playing the Scotty Cameron Phantom X T5.5 at the 2024 Masters, but the Newport 2 blade seems to return to the bag every time.

Even on Wednesday, Koepka used Cameron during the pro-am, and the golfer was the only one to put a putter in his bag afterward when he returned to the putting green.
But later that afternoon, Koepka told Golfweek‘s Eamon Lynch was switching this week to the Spider Tour X. Not only does the Spider Tour X mark a more forgiving mallet transition from his blade, but it’s also the first putter Koepka has used in his career without a milled face.
Koepka went with the L-neck Spider Tour X, the same model that Scottie Scheffler switched to in 2024 and has won 14 PGA Tour titles and 16 events around the world, including the American Express two weeks ago. The Spiders were also the winningest putter family on the PGA Tour last season, racking up 13 wins in the FedEx Cup season with seven players.
Through 12 holes Thursday, Koepka didn’t seem to find the same magic as Scheffler as he was four on the day and two strokes off the green, 119th in the 123-player field.
