Can Alex Newhook Solve The Montreal Canadiens’ Right Wing Problem

Will The Montreal Canadiens Look Inside Or Outside For Their Right Wing Solution

Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff joined TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked about the Montreal Canadiens’ options at the starting line at right tackle. Di Marco said that, depending on Alex Newhook’s timeline, he could be a more important in-house trade acquisition than other right-wingers on the market.

Host: “I’m looking at David Pagnotta here for the fourth quarter, who reports that the Habs seem fine. Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton, they seem to be doing well with this current roster they have, but the need and void they want to fill here is right on that starting line, next to Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. Who do you think is there? Is it the best fit for the Habs in that role?

NHL rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Patrik Laine, and potential destinations

Anthony Di Marco: “As a kind of extra thing?”

Host: “Sure. I mean, I don’t know what Dave is referring to here, if it’s an external addition or if it’s an internal repair that they have, but yes, externally, I think that would be my question.”

Di Marco: “Like, I think, yes, getting a true winger, like, I would think, like, I’m not off the top of my head. I don’t remember the exact timeline for Alex Newhook, but I thought maybe he would be suitable when he comes back, and he might be like the type of things to get an in-house trade.

You look around the NHL and maybe go to a team like the New York Rangers, try to pick the bones of a right winger there. Look, this is just someone that I know is available because of how close they are to him, but like Bobby Brink in Philadelphia.

Was that really someone who thought that for a long time it would be the basis of the first line? He’s another underrated forward like Cole Caufield so maybe that wouldn’t suit me, but honestly, for me, that wouldn’t be something if I were Kent Hughes I’d try to track down on the trade market.

I think you have a lot of pieces in the house to try to do that, and it’s going to depend a lot on where things are right now, Alex Newhook. “

Host: “I love it, your thought process there of Alex Newhook, and there’s hope that he’s been skating, that he’ll be back before the end of the season. And then you bring in a guy like you say, Bobby Brink, right? So the Canadiens are going to look to go, can we stop Bobby Brink stuff? But if we think that Alex Newhook is going to break anything than this team, why would Alex Newhook break anything than this team? That that’s the way I think the Habs have it right now.”

Di Marco: “Yeah, that’s just it, isn’t it? Like, again, it depends on how high they want to swing. It depends on Alex Newhook’s timetable, and again, do you think he’s going to be a good fit there? Now, I think as a left shot, he’d probably be a better fit than Kirby Dach.

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens Still Looking to Add to Their Roster

Obviously, (Juraj) Slafkovsky fits in well on the second line, a guy like Zach Buldoc or Alex Texier probably doesn’t have the skill level to make that long-term fit. But as far as I’m concerned here, I mean, I’m going to look at Newhook first and foremost, and then look at outside options. But again, you have to find out first, before anything else, what his schedule is.”
