Put your shifter on ‘cruise control’ for a better tempo. Here is the way

Getting more speed in your swing is a popular goal for many recreational golfers. But for many of them, the distance gains they desire are achieved by hitting the center of the clubface more often.
The LPGA Professionals are a good example of this. Despite the fact that their swing speed is not insanely fast, they can all produce a lot of distance due to the quality of their batting. For many recreational players, this program is a good one to follow. One of the easiest ways to encourage a stronger strike in the ball is to swing at a better tempo.
At the GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher Summit a few years ago, coach EA Tischler explained a good technique that recreational players can use to achieve this smooth tempo.
“He’s going to rise to the top of the running back,” Tischler said. “And when you get there you’ll count to three. After that, you’ll just turn and turn, feel like you; you’re sitting on cruise control.”
Tischler stressed that while it’s important to be quick on the ball, having that mindset in mind when swinging can lead to bad swings and bad follow-ups.
“We don’t want to feel like we’re running too fast because of football,” Tischler said. “You always hear that, but that’s so you don’t end up lowering the standard.”
Instead of feeling like you’re rushing everything from the top, try taking a moment to collect yourself and begin the transition. By doing that a few times during practice, you’ll get your swing on cruise control sooner and have better tempo and hitting the ball.
