The possibilities are endless when it comes to the TaylorMade Qi4D driver, so you better know what you’re doing when trying to find your perfect setting.
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, fellow broadcaster Johnny Wunder explained how much he learned about the driver after hanging out with TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld.
“These Qi4D heads are very different, and I need to call them now,” Wunder said. “You can tie that head if you don’t know what you’re doing.
And I’ve said this a few times on this podcast, and just in the videos, because you’re carrying a lot of weight, you really have to know. “
With 12 settings on TaylorMade’s FCT loft sleeve and four interchangeable weights that come with two 4 g stock weights and two 9 g weights, there are 128 combinations with stock weights and standard loft sleeves. That’s not counting the other two loft sleeves (1.5˚ and 1.0˚) available from TaylorMade tour fitters.
With so many options, the onus is now more than ever to actually unlock the Qi4D driver.
“You have to be an expert at working with this much weight to move and be able to understand TaylorMade’s different FCT sleeves that they have,” Wunder said. “So those drivers, I think as they go along, I think they’re the best partners, your True Specs, your Club Champions, your great clubs, the other Golf Galaxy installers, the PGA Tour Superstore, your high-end simulators, your performance simulators. By the time we get to the summer, everybody’s going to get that.”

Wunder said that his first test of the TaylorMade lineup with Charles Howell III, he struggled to find the face because neither he nor Wunder really understood how to move the weight in the right way to get it right.
But after Wunder’s match with Rietveld, he could help him little by little.
“I said, ‘Hey, look, why don’t you take all the weights, nine in the back and four in the front, swap those out, put them on 10.5 and take the false positives and put them in the upright position,'” Wunder said. “Because that’s what Adrian did with me and I had the same problem with QI4D that Charlie did.
