MacKenzie Weegar, Jason Dickinson, and Andrew Mangiapane

Weegar is headed to Utah from Calgary
The NHL Trade Deadline is coming fast and furious on Wednesday night. The Calgary Flames are sending defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. As part of the deal, the Flames get defenseman Olli Maatta.
It is confirmed.
The deal for Weegar includes three second-rounders from Utah, including their picks and those acquired from the Rangers and Ottawa.
Cornell C unsigned Jonathan Castagna and Olli Maatta.
No retention in Weegar’s remaining 5 years.
A big draw.– Eric Francis (@EricFrancis) March 5, 2026
In addition to Maatta, the Flames will receive three second-round picks from 2026, as well as potential Jonathan Castagna.
Of course it depends on where they all fall on the Draft board, though #NYR The second is more valuable. According to one NHL GM (who is not part of the deal), the general equation: two 2’s are almost equal to one after a time of 1’s.
Prospect has not signed Cornell forward Jonathan Castagna, per source.

We know Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong wanted to be aggressive, but didn’t want to hurt the prospect pool he was putting together. Utah has been sniffing around Robert Thomas of St. Louis. Louis Blues, but the asking price was too high. However, this did not stop him from trying to add to his team, especially at the back, as Mammoth held the qualifying spot in the West.
NHL Rumors: What’s Calgary Flames Timeline To Be Competitive?
Weegar is in the third year of an eight-year deal with an estimated salary of $6.25 million. Remember, Weegar was acquired from the Florida Panthers along with Jonathan Huberdeau as part of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. Weegar is a strong two-way defenseman who is aggressive at all three positions and can move the puck.
MacKenzie Weegar, acquired by UTA, is a two-way defender who plays an active and interesting game at all three spots. He powerfully retrieves loose pucks and blocks passing lanes, and has plenty of puck movement skills himself. It’s prone to catastrophic screw-ups. #TusksUp pic.twitter.com/lLMhLZyz0m

Looks like Weegar is on his way to Utah. It can do a little bit of everything. Solid at all 3 positions, moves the puck well, good on the defensive side of the puck. Disturbing.

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Utah Mammoths, and Philadelphia Flyers
The Weegar trade will be a huge loss for a Flames team looking to open a new structure in a few years. Weegar could be a piece to help guide the young Flames through tough times. However, Flames GM Craig Conroy’s goal was to make the team smaller.
MacKenzie Weegar was one of my favorite people I’ve covered in sports.
He has truly embraced being in the Canadian market, loves working with the media, is a leader, and is a real person away from the cameras.
Conroy did a great job getting a good return on the trade…and…

Chicago Sends Dickinson to Edmonton for Mangiapane
Another pending trade deal was between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. Oilers trade Andrew Mangiapane to Blackhawks for Jason Dickinson.
NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers Two Forward Options
The Blackhawks kept 50 percent of Dickinson’s $4.25 million salary. Dickinson is in the final year of a two-year contract.
In addition, the Chicago Blackhawks receive Edmonton’s 2027 first-round pick, which is a protected top 12.

Both the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks are swapping middle-six forwards. The Oilers were looking for a third-line center with defensive potential.
Jason Dickinson, reportedly acquired by EDM, is the shutdown center. Works hard, good stick, some body, has done very well in heavy use at CHI this season. Little offense except for good sneaky wraps and wrist drags from range. #LetsGoOilers pic.twitter.com/btO9zdSyv1

Meanwhile, Mangiapane is hoping to get the goal he once had in Calgary with the Blackhawks.
Andrew Mangiapane, a 2x$3.6M signing by EDM, is a middle-six midfielder who unfortunately lacked the sharp shots and finish that made him one of hockey’s most successful two-way forwards in the early 2020s since his shoulder injury in 2023. A restoration project. pic.twitter.com/6uJNHY1Rvw

NHL Rumors: Chicago Blackhawks; Training Camp Battles Draft Deadline
As noted, the Blackhawks under GM Kyle Davidson cleared space and acquired players that would otherwise not be part of the team’s long-term future.
#Blackhawks actually trade Jason Dickinson, Connor Murphy, an unknown Manigiapane player, a protected 2027 1st rounder and a 2028 2nd rounder. Like the price the Blackhawks got here.
I’m waiting to hear who the unknown player is but I like this
