Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens

Did the Edmonton Oilers Have a Defenseman in Play?
Dave Pagnotta on Saturday’s TFP Hotsove on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio said the Edmonton Oilers had Darnell Nurse’s name at the trade deadline, and this could be updated in the summer.

NHL Trade Deadline Fallout: Islanders, Blues, No-Movement and No-Trade Clauses
Peter Berce: “Let’s do a couple of quick songs here on the Oilers and Habs. Dave, you said you had something about the Oilers that you wanted to say.”
Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, this is something we’re going to hear a lot over the summer. I’m sure. I’m just going to say it. Try to tune it out, but let’s just get the band out.”
Berce: “Okay.”
Pagnotta: “There was talk this week, all week, that they wanted to get rid of Darnell Nurse and the cap hit $9.25 million.
But Darnell Nurse, his name was there all week, and I couldn’t believe it at first. I was thinking ok, maybe there are people talking. But no, yeah, it looks like Stan Bowman’s been involved in some conversations out there involving Darnell Nurse, and I think that’s something we have to watch out for this summer.”
NHL Trade Deadline Fallout: Trade Phases Big Factor in Minimal Player Movement
Berce: “The price is high, and if they can help me with it, any way to success, you need to be better. It’s that simple.”
NHLRumors.com Note: With the addition of the defense, the Edmonton Oilers know they need to change their mix back there now by adding Connor Murphy. I can’t have two defensemen in Nurse ($9.25 million AAV) and Evan Bouchard ($10.5 million AAV) in the backfield. The Oilers are looking for a solid defenseman. Does Edmonton want to play Nurse on the third pairing at that price? Even last summer, people were wondering if the Nurse would be playing at some point?
Montreal Canadiens Failed Deals at Deadline
Dave Pagnotta on TFP Hotsove on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio said the Montreal Canadiens are looking to add a forward and a right-handed defenseman. Whether they were the same deal that GM Kent Hughes talked about remains to be seen.

Trade Deadline Fallout: Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers, and New Jersey Devils
Peter Berce: “What do the Habs want to do or not do?”
Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, so Kent Hughes said yesterday (Friday) that they’re moving forward, focusing on adding impact, making a significant impact, adding. I think it was for a top player, I think it was for a first-class player, and he says he’s hoping to wrap up those talks in the summer, so we’ll kind of see where it goes.
They were also very close. And maybe I don’t think it’s the same, but I know they were very close, very close to adding a defender, adding the right defender, like very close. And as soon as it finally came down. Even so, I don’t get the idea that he’s the player he’s talking about, or that Kent Hughes is talking about, I think he’s a first-class player, because that’s what they wanted.
NHL Trade Deadline Fallout: Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers
We know that they pushed for Nazem Kadri, and then things didn’t work out there, and he ended up going back to Colorado. But the Canadiens had two things going for them by all accounts, a quality player and a right-handed D, and they were very close at right-handed D. And it didn’t happen.”
NHLRumors.com Note: The Montreal Canadiens have been holding on to their plan after their early additions of Phil Danault and Alexandre Texier. The thinking was that they wanted a quality striker to play alongside Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki, but they also wanted help at right back. We know that Kent Hughes said he was working on a deal that couldn’t get over the line for a player that wasn’t in the rumors. You know Montreal will make a move in the NHL Draft as usual.
