The defending champion, Jakub Mensik, returns to the Miami Open presented by Itau balancing the weight of expectation and the momentum of the statement at the beginning of the season, when he is aiming for a Top 10 collection.

The Czech, 20, comes with important points to defend after last year’s dream of winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title – where he defeated idol Novak Djokovic in the final – but that challenge does nothing to overshadow the rapid progress he continues to make in 2026.

Mensik lifted the trophy in Auckland in January and backed it up with the biggest win of his career over World No. 2 Jannik Sinner on his way to the semifinals in Doha. As a result, he moved up to ninth place in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

With a long way to go until he can start thinking about a debut at the Nitto ATP Finals, Mensik is facing immediate pressure from the PIF ATP Rankings. As he climbed to the World-high No. 12 earlier this month, Mensik has now dropped to 26 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings after dropping 990 points since his run in Miami last year.

For Mensik, however, the focus remains on the inside as he returns to the scene of his greatest victory.

“When I came back here again, I saw everything, it put a lot of glasses on me in the competition [last year],” Mensik told ATP Media in a pre-tournament interview.” It’s really good to be back here, but I’m trying to focus on this week because it’s a new week, a new opportunity.

“Nowhere is it written that I will win this tournament again, so I have to focus on myself and continue doing what I’m doing.”

Mensik will open his Miami campaign against either Sebastian Baez or qualifier Adam Walton. Regardless of the outcome over these two days, his body of work over the past year underscores his growing presence at the top level.

A 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals contender, Mensik has already won nine Lexus ATP Head2Heads against top 10 opponents and reached the fourth round at this year’s Australian Open before being forced to withdraw ahead of his clash with Djokovic. More importantly, the Czech believes his greatest achievement is beyond numbers.

“After two years on Tour, I can say that it’s not so much about your level and your results, but more about how long you take. [have been] on Tour,” Mensik said of his career so far. “I feel like I know the guys a lot and I’m playing more than one match against them. This way, it’s different.”

With experience building and high confidence, Miami presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Although the PIF ATP Rankings may change in the short term, Mensik’s goal of breaking the Top 10 is getting closer and closer.
