AHL Power Rankings: There’s a New Management Team

Patrick Williams submits the FloHockey AHL Power Rankings each week during the regular season.

After four and a half months, the new team stands atop the AHL Power Rankings.

Step aside, Grand Rapids Griffins. The Providence Bruins take first place this week. The Griffins had a 19-week streak that began on Nov.

Amazingly, both teams still have a shot at surpassing the AHL record for hitting percentage in a season, which has stood for 33 years. The Binghamton Rangers’ .775 hit was set in 1992-93. It’s possible that both Grand Rapids and Providence could break that record when the AHL regular season wraps up on April 19.

Providence and Grand Rapids each have 14 games and will need to reach 112 points to break that Binghamton mark. The Bruins have 91 points and need to play .750 hockey the rest of the way to secure those 19 points. Grand Rapids, with 90 points, should hit .786 down the stretch.

The Bruins visit the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Wednesday before making a stop in Utica on Friday. They finish their weekend at home against the Comets on Saturday. Grand Rapids has a 3-in-3 weekend, all on the road, starting Friday at Rockford.

1) Providence Bruins (+1)

2) Grand Rapids Griffins (-1)
Roster moves have plagued the Griffins recently. Whether it’s the constant travel back and forth to Detroit or the trade that left the Griffins without experienced defensemen Justin Holl and Ian Mitchell, the Griffins find themselves in a very bad situation right now.

3) Dominion of Ontario (–)
After going 0-0-2-1 last week, Reign has a chance to pick up points this week. After a home date with the Abbotsford Canucks on Wednesday, they travel to Iowa for match-ups with the Wild. The rise of the two bottom teams in the league is an opportunity that Reign must take.

4) Laval Rocket (–)
If Jacob Fowler doesn’t return to the Rockets anytime soon, the Rockets at least have goal insurance after acquiring two-time Calder Cup champion Hunter Shepard from the Ottawa Senators. Kaapo Kähkönen, who not only has little maintenance but does not save the team, directed the Rocket to the net; he is able to sit for a long time and come in and take a few starts in a row. Wednesday’s home game against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins is a tough test. The teams will meet twice before the end of the month.

5) Syracuse Crunch (–)
On the ice, the 11-1-0-0 offense was interrupted by a loss to the Toronto Marlies against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms before picking up a point in a loss to Laval. Without the snow, the Crunch fared much better. After adding Matthew Peca in a trade, the Tampa Bay Lightning went out and acquired Mitchell from the Crunch in a deal with the Detroit Red Wings. Friday’s quick trip to Rochester is followed by back-to-back home games against the Cleveland Monsters this weekend.

6) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (+1)
The grind of six games in 10 nights continues for the Penguins, starting with that game in Laval. They just went 3-in-3 over the weekend with a 3-1 win at Lehigh Valley.

7) Charlotte Checkers (+2)
After a 6-2-2-0 road trip that spanned nearly three weeks, the Checkers came home on a six-game hitting streak. They opened a series of games against the Bridgeport Islanders. They’re going with a three-goal rotation that includes Cooper Black, Louis Domingue, and Kirill Gerasimyuk, but it’s working. Domingue and Gerasimyuk gave Black a break last weekend and closed.

8) Colorado Eagles (+2)
It continues to be a step forward followed by a setback for the Eagles. They got a split on a two-game visit to San Diego. After two games at home against the Coachella Valley Firebirds this weekend, the Eagles face a tough six-game road trip to cross the Pacific Division.

9) San Jose Barracuda (-3)
How long goalie Yaroslav Askarov will stay with the San Jose Sharks will determine how long the Barracuda have to stay without Laurent Brossoit. The veteran arrived in a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks organization in January and has established the Barracuda in net. Without him, they allowed 10 goals in a loss to the Tucson Roadrunners last weekend.

10) Bakersfield Condors (-2)
With Leon Draisaitl out of the Edmonton Oilers, Max Jones has moved up to the Condors. They were hammered last Saturday night by the Texas Stars, a team they will see twice at the end of the month on home ice.

11) Cleveland Monsters (+1)
As good a team as they are, the Monsters had two very successful games, and won them. Traveling to Hartford for two games, they took care of the Wolf Pack and kept themselves within striking distance of second place in the North Division. With the Toronto Marlies hot, however, they need to keep picking up points to avoid falling into fourth place and facing a best-of-three first-round series.

12) Coachella Valley Firebirds (+1)
Heading into a home-and-home series with Pacific Division leader Ontario, the Firebirds showed they can compete with a top power like the Reigns with back-to-back overtime victories. In the second game, they traveled to Ontario and held Dominion to just 21 shots. They also got some scoring help from veteran Cooper Marody.

13) Henderson Silver Knights (+2)
Ben Hemmerling can’t stop scoring goals. Carl Lindbom has held the team in games where the Silver Knights have had very few shots. The Silver Knights are a night-to-night adventure, but fun to watch. They won 7-6 in overtime last week in Tucson and closed out the weekend with a 7-5 win in Abbotsford. After completing a six-game road trip in Calgary, they head straight home to face the Texas Stars in back-to-back home games.

14) Chicago Wolves (-3)
Wolves continue to be a mystery. They lost games to the Iowa Wild and Rockford IceHogs and shut out Grand Rapids. They scored just four goals in their three games last week.

15) Texas Stars (-1)
Kicking off a Pacific Division series, the Stars earned a split visit to Bakersfield last weekend. After a two-game break with Chicago opening this week, they will return to the Pacific Division with a six-game road trip that begins at Henderson this weekend. They have a chance to overtake the Manitoba Moose in third place in the Central Division soon.

16) Toronto Marlies (-3)
Front-loading all those road games into the season schedule could be paying off now for the Marlies. Their win last Saturday afternoon against the Rochester Americans opened nine of ten games at the Coca-Cola Coliseum. Aside from a quick trip to Rochester for a March 27 game, the Marlies won’t see the road until April 10. While disappointment continues to surround the Toronto Maple Leafs, at least the Marlies have a chance to redeem something in the organization.
