A simple grip fixed the worst miss for this LPGA winner

My preparation for the season with Maja Stark started recently this year. And while we made some solid gains and fine adjustments, there was still one shot that bothered him with scoring tools: the kind of high, floating shot that leaks a little to the right. It lacked authority, and made birding a constant challenge.
As I watched him warm up in Orlando during the week of the LPGA Championship, something caught my eye. He kept fiddling with his left hand, trying to get comfortable with the club. Obviously, that affects everything – taking the trip started to feel like fun and being touched wasn’t something he consistently wanted. When those pieces aren’t right, his self-esteem begins to dwindle.
Then it started to get light.

Between shots, Maja chatted and did some swinging with only his left hand on the club. And every time he did, the catch looked perfect. So I kept watching, and it kept happening. (I might even stretch our conversations a bit to catch him on those occasions when the catch is going well.)
After a while, Maja asked if I had ever heard of combined holding. I told him that a guy named Jack Nicklaus was doing well with it.
He smiled and said, “I’ll try a few shots with that.”
From the first turn, his left grip was solid. I watched his left hand land on the club well – slightly turned to the right side of the club, the butt of the club under the heel of his left hand, not off the side of it. When he started hitting the shot, I knew we were going to solve that float error to the right.
In Maja’s words: “The takeaway felt very light. The impact was solid, and the clubface felt very controlled.”

Of course, there was a quick discussion about whether this was really the right time of year to make the change, but Maja said yes. And when I saw his left hand move correctly and consistently, without all the irritation and correction, I became a believer.
Funnily enough, grip modification is often reserved as a last resort for professionals. But this time, it was just what the doctor ordered. It allowed Maja to get his left hand on the club with little fuss. Sometimes a simple change makes a big difference.
Even when it comes to swinging the great champions.
