AL East Notes: Chisholm, Palacios, Kiner-Falefa, Bieber

The Yankees secondary domain Jazz Chisholm Jr. he’s open to talks about an extension but the club on that front hasn’t been contacted yet, he told Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. Chisholm is entering his final year in control of the club before being scheduled for free.

It’s a similar situation to last year, when it seemed like Chisholm was more open to negotiations than the team. Spring training is the usual time for clubs to talk to players about extensions, so it’s notable that there hasn’t been much momentum in that department.

The Yankees don’t make many extensions in general and would prefer to wait things out in the middle of the middle. A year from now, that hope may be possible George Lombard Jr. you have joined Anthony Volpe again José Caballero in mixing. If the Yanks can cover their middle spots inside, they can focus their recruiting efforts elsewhere next winter. If not, they can go back to Chisholm as a free agent.

Some camp notes from the AL East…

  • I Radiation they will find out Richie Palacios three more responded this spring, reports Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times. Palacios has played mostly second base and the corner outfield in his career. His experience at third base includes ten innings in 2024. Adding more flexibility could help him carve out a bench role, though he has an option left. Little Caminero he’ll be familiar to Tampa at third base but his defensive grades haven’t been great, so it would make sense for him to occasionally serve as a designated hitter or be replaced by a better defender late in some games.
  • I Red Sox they will be Isiah Kiner-Falefa play first base in the spring, reports Sean McAdam of MassLive. Kiner-Falefa has extensive experience in all areas of the diamond except the first base. The Sox have it Wilson Contreras like their usual starting base but added depth. Places to stay in Triston Casas he tore his left hamstring last year and may miss Opening Day. Romy González he is also doubtful for the opener due to a recent shoulder injury that required an injection of platelet-rich plasma. Kiner-Falefa may not be needed as much because of Contreras’ presence but injuries can happen at any time and Kiner-Falefa has also indicated that he may run for Contreras at times.
  • I Blue Jays it is possible to find Shane Bieber returned sooner than expected, according to manager John Schneider (link via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com). Schneider said Bieber “felt good” when he threw 120 feet and could be off the mound in two weeks. Last week, it was reported that Bieber would start the season on the injured list out of caution due to arm fatigue. This update may not change that timeline, but the team has enough room in the rotation to move slowly through his promotion plan regardless. A healthy Bieber will enter the background Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavageagain Kevin Gausman in the Jays’ rotation. Currently, Cody Ponce again Jose Berrios gather a group.
