As Brooks Koepka prepares to return to the PGA Tour, a new challenge awaits

Brooks Koepka is nervous. That’s not a phrase often associated with the five-time major champion and golf game’s greatest hunter.
But there was Koepka on Tuesday at Torrey Pines, re-introducing himself as a member of the PGA Tour after defecting from LIV Golf, talking about the nerves he was feeling. The senses of the press conference. Emotions will be in front of PGA Tour fans again. Feelings of having what he expects will be tough conversations with other members of the PGA Tour who didn’t go. Koepka said he was “anxious” heading into Thursday’s first round at the Farmers Insurance Open. He wants to be inside the ropes, which is where the fighter is most comfortable.
Brooks Koepka is nervous, yes. But underneath the emotions there is something else. Something that looks like the Brooks Koepka we’ve known for the past decade: the joy of competition.

Koepka returns to the PGA Tour looking different than the one he left in 2022. The PGA Tour now tops World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who has won 20 times in just under three years. When Koepka attended LIV in June of 2022, Scheffler was just starting to rise after winning four of his six starts, including the 2022 Masters. Another thing that has changed since Koepka became a member of the Tour? McIlroy’s career Grand Slam-clinching Masters victory last year was similar to Koepka’s grand total; his huge advantage over McIlroy is gone.
“Obviously, Scottie has been leading the way, I think that’s the right word,” Koepka said Tuesday. “Yeah, Rory’s got five now. I don’t think anybody’s shocked by this if you’ve watched golf the last few years, how well those guys are playing. I’m really excited to fight them. I think that’s going to be really fun. I think the competitive side of me, obviously, obviously wants to do a little bit better but that’s going to do a lot better than Scotte tough now.
“I’m excited about it. I want to play with those guys, see where I’m at and how I can get better.”
How many times has Koepka faced McIlroy and Scheffler will be on him. He has been eliminated from the majors and is in the field at the Players Championship. But as part of his deal to return to the PGA Tour, Koepka must play his way through Signature Events. He is not eligible to receive a sponsor’s invitation.
That suits Brooks Koepka just fine.
A mass murderer who thrives on small things – be they real or perceived – likes the thought of needing to prove himself again. Before Brooks Koepka that Brooks Koepka, was a DP World Tour grinder with many talents and a chip on his shoulder proving that he is one of the best in the world.
Now, through his actions and the guidelines of the “Returning Member Program,” he can do that again.
“That’s a nice thing, I like the gear, I’ve always enjoyed it,” said Koepka about needing to play his way in the Signature Events. “I think it’s a fresh start for me, which is great. It’s just another chapter in my book. I’m excited about that. I feel like my game is in great shape, and I want to see where it’s at. Obviously, this week is a little different. But yeah, I’d just like to finish this week and feel like I can start playing golf and have a lot of fun.
“I’d like to try to get into those Signature events and play well, but I understand that I have to earn that and I’m looking forward to that challenge,” Koepka added. “It can be something where there will be a different place and I have to work my tail off and I’m excited about that.”
Brooks Koepka, scared? He also wins a little. Facing a new challenge, starting a different chapter, becoming a member of the PGA Tour again. He was happy to show that he is still Brooks Koepka, a five-time champion and a generational champion.
Don’t expect the feelings to last long. That Brooks Koepka has a tee time on Thursday and a new mountain to climb.
