Blue Jays Extend Ross Atkins, John Schneider

The Blue Jays announced this morning that they have signed GM Ross Atkins and manager John Schneider to contract extensions. Both were entering the final seasons of their current contracts, but Atkins has re-signed a five-year deal that will see him through the 2031 season and Schneider will return for a two-year deal that runs through the 2028 campaign.

The news comes as no surprise following Toronto’s incredible run in the playoffs last year, where they clinched the AL pennant and fell just shy of defeating the Dodgers in seven games during the World Series. Although Toronto ended up losing Game Seven of that series, it’s easy to see that ownership was happy with the team’s performance. It’s not just that the team was greenlit Dylan Cease and pursue other big names on the free agent market such as Kyle Tucker this winter, but Blue Jays chairman Edward Rogers also decided to give team president and CEO Mark Shapiro a five-year contract extension back in December that runs until 2030. If Shapiro did get an extension, both Atkins and Schneider were widely thought to eventually be trailing around the league.

Atkins joined the Jays before the 2016 season, and oversaw the start of the season. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. time in Toronto. While Guerrero signed with the organization as a rookie international a few months before Atkins and Shapiro arrived, every professional game he played during his career was with them managing the club. Guerrero has been the face of Toronto’s return to relevance after Atkins’ early rebuilding period with the organization, from the second year of his career in 2020 onward the Jays have made the season four times in six years with an overall record of 472-398. That’s about an 88-win pace over the past six years, and under Schneider’s leadership over the past three years they’ve gone 257-229 and achieved an almost 86-win pace with two playoff appearances.

It might seem like a stretch for the club to decide to keep the good times in its collection after this year’s run to the World Series, but that wasn’t a guarantee this time last year. One year ago, Guerrero had yet to sign an extension, the club had held both Shohei Ohtani again Juan Soto in free agency during the offseason, and the Jays were coming off a disappointing 88-loss season that saw the club traded at the trade deadline and cost their long-term viability as contenders. It is fortunate that the year 2025 of the organization answered those questions, because it is not difficult to imagine that some bad work on the field last year ends up changing the front office and the dugout rather than extending the contracts of the leadership of the organization.

With Atkins, Schneider, and Shapiro entering the 2026 season and looking forward to at least a few more years with the Blue Jays together, long-term deals for Guerrero, Cease, Alejandro Kirkagain Andres Gimenez to make all the foundations of the organization going forward. Other pieces under long-term control include Trey Yesavage, Anthony Santander, Kazuma OkamotoLouie Varland, and a host of top hitting talents Addison Barger. A solid team overall, although the next few years will also see the team compete with upcoming free agents George Springer, Daulton Varsho, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieberand other important members of the list will need to be replaced.
