Brewers notes: Priester, Henderson, Quero

Quinn Priester he has battled wrist pain all spring. The Brewers will place him on the 15-day disabled list to start the season. The timeline beyond that isn’t entirely clear, but MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reports that Priester will visit a specialist on Wednesday to try to pinpoint the source of the problem.
Priester described the injury last week as temporary pain rather than a serious injury. It’s from the second half of last season. Priester was able to continue playing catch but did not play in a game this spring. They will hope that tomorrow’s analysis will give them a clear way forward. There is no sign of serious damage. According to MLB.com’s injury tracker, the team still hopes he will make his season debut in April.
Manager Pat Murphy said last week Jacob Misiorowski again Chad Patrick were the only locks for the Opening Day rotation. Brandon Woodruff he will obviously be there again if he builds enough from last year’s edition. He threw two innings and 32 pitches in his Spring Training debut over the weekend. Priester would be key if healthy after posting a 3.32 ERA in 157 1/3 innings last year.
His injury leaves at least two spots up for grabs to start the season. Logan Henderson he has a good chance to win one of them after pitching to a 1.78 ERA while striking out a third of the opposition in his first five career starts.
Henderson, who finished last season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation, reported elbow discomfort over the weekend. Fortunately, the Brewers don’t seem to mind. McCalvy said the 24-year-old is feeling better and is scheduled to return to work tomorrow. He may return to the Cactus League game as soon as this weekend. Henderson pitched four innings of two-run ball with one hit in two spring appearances. It’s a situation that we need to watch out for but it’s not a trend right now in IL living.
Seasonal trade discovery Brandon Sproat again Kyle Harrison almost competition Henderson and lefty Robert Gasser with exchange activities. Murphy also left it open to use Aaron Ashby or DL Hall as starters, although they profile better in support roles.
Hall and Harrison – each of whom has pitched just three innings in Spring Training so far – are slated to start the next two games. Sproat has given up three runs while striking out seven of his 21 batters. Gasser hit nearly seven runs on three homers across 6 1/3 frames.
The Brewers also did a few camps this week, mostly picking up the opportunity Jefferson Quero. He will begin the season back in Triple-A, where he hit .255/.336/.412 in 250 plate appearances last season. That’s what was expected after the Brewers’ signing Gary Sanchez on a cheap one-year contract to work in the background William Contreras.
Unregistered invitee Reese McGuire He is also in camp but has an uphill road to a roster spot barring injury. He has gone 2-14 with a homer and six strikeouts. Sánchez also struggled, hitting .208 with no extra-base hits in 27 trips to the plate. Contreras, Sánchez and Quero are the other three catchers on the 40-man roster. McGuire, who cannot be sent to the minors without his consent if he earns a spot on the 40-man roster, could lure another team with more flexibility in the backup role later in camp.
