AHL Power Rankings: Teams Hitting Season Midpoint

Patrick Williams submits the FloHockey AHL Power Rankings each week during the regular season.
The Grand Rapids Griffins have stumbled recently, relatively speaking. The Providence Bruins continue to keep Grand Rapids in the spotlight while the Tucson Roadrunners’ recent push has landed them in the top half of the AHL as the AHL regular season reaches its midpoint.
Let’s break down the top half of the AHL.
1) Grand Rapids Griffins (–)
After a season-high three game winless streak, the Griffins bounced back 2-0 against the Milwaukee Admirals last Saturday. Michal Postava had to face only ten shots in registering his shutout. Heading into the second half, the Griffins are still chasing the best regular season in AHL history.
2) Providence Bruins (–)
Providence put on a two-game home clinic against the Cleveland Monsters. Recalled from the ECHL’s Maine Mariners, goaltender Luke Cavallin continues to show that he is capable above the AHL level. With a three-game weekend against Belleville, Bridgeport, and Toronto, the P-Bruins have a chance to bank on more points. Currently, they are only eight points behind Grand Rapids.
3) Dominion of Ontario (+1)
It was an amazing week for Reign, who went to Colorado and won back-to-back. They then headed to Texas to face the Stars, where they got separated. Despite the split, they allowed just 35 combined shots in the two games at Texas. Now they are returning to the warmth of Southern California for a long time.
4) Colorado Eagles (-1)
The Eagles got another boost with the addition of Valtteri Puustinen in a trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. By putting that game with Ontario behind them, they will come off a two-game sweep of the Henderson Silver Knights at home this past weekend. Starting Wednesday, they travel to Bakersfield for a tough matchup with the Condors. Kyle Keyser continues to be a capable presence in filling the net as needed.’

5) Bakersfield Condors (+3)
Connor Ungar has allowed just three goals in his last four games. He returned to his hometown last weekend and led the Condors to victory over the Calgary Wranglers. Bakersfield then completed the sweep on Sunday. This two-game set with Colorado at home will be a good test to see where the Condors stand.
6) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (–)
Puustinen’s departure is another tough break for a roster that already had Sam Poulin, Danton Heinen, and Phil Tomasino leave the Pittsburgh organization on deals this offseason. That’s a lot of goals that should come off any team’s list. They got a two-game split with the Hartford Wolf Pack at home last weekend and then take care of the Springfield Thunderbirds to open the new week. Busy schedule ahead. They have the Checkers at home on Saturday night, a challenge against an opponent that has put them in trouble for points this season. But the plan is fine as the Penguins won’t have to leave Pennsylvania until Feb. 18.
7) Charlotte Checkers (+3)
Charlotte hosted the Springfield Thunderbirds last week, blowing them out in a back-to-back 8-2 victory. Against a better opponent in the Hershey Bears, the Checkers scored three of four points. Now their week has started with significant help from the Florida Panthers, who sent forwards Noah Gregor and Jack Studnicka during another road trip.
8) San Jose Barracuda (-3)
Defenseman Cole Clayton is out of the Abbotsford Canucks, although the San Jose Sharks loaned NHL veteran Nick Leddy to the Barracuda. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to see an NHL veteran coming to the AHL roster, especially with waivers to meet his new teammates. Laurent Brossoit got his first game for the Barracuda to help them get at least a split on a two-game trip to Tucson.
9) Chicago Wolves (–)
It was a great weekend for the Wolves until they beat the Rockford IceHogs 6-5. First place has long been a distant goal for Wolves, but they fit in well as the Central Division’s second-place team. Next stop: Cleveland.
10) Laval Rocket (-3)
An 0-2-1-1 slump sent the Rockets on a six-game road trip. They had a difficult week at home, picking up just two points from six available. The six-game road trip will open with stops in Abbotsford and Calgary, two struggling teams. The Rockets also have forward Jacob Fowler and forward Owen Beck back from the Montreal Canadiens, so this is a time to build some space.
11) Syracuse Crunch (+1)
Wins in four of their last five games have got the Crunch well again. Even better for them, they won these games without goaltender Brandon Halverson. A home-and-home series this weekend with the runner-up Utica Comets means a chance to rack up more points.
12) Coachella Valley Firebirds (+2)
First it was Victor Östman covering the San Diego Gulls. Jack LaFontaine then went ahead and shut out Abbotsford to finish the weekend. It was a different effort for the Firebirds in net, and Jani Nyman has been strong since being handed an assignment by the Seattle Kraken. They had a five game winning streak last season.
13) Manitoba Moose (+2)
After being beaten by Rockford, 6-2, Moose then went to Laval and got back-to-back wins. Eight of their next 10 games are at home, where they have had the lions this season. But it’s a chance to run for second place in the Central Division.
14) Tucson Roadrunners (NR)
This weekend’s two-game trip to Henderson begins a long stretch of road hockey that will begin moving forward in March. Fortunately for the Roadrunners, their 7-0-2-0 run has put them in the playoff conversation. Rookie defenseman Dmitri Simashev is 5-10-15 in his last 14 games, which is a great mark after being traded to Tucson by the Utah Mammoth.
15) Hershey Bears (NR)
Up and down most of the season, the Bears are on the upswing right now. Their schedule will expand next 3-in-3 weekend.
16) Rochester Americans (-3)
Inconsistency continues to hold the Americans back. They are on a 0-1-1-1 slide. Weekend home dates with Utica and Cleveland are ahead of the Amerks.
