Daniil Medvedev has a lot to be proud of in his BNP Paribas Open tournament.
The 30-year-old leaves California with a career-high 18 ATP Tour wins, including an upset over World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who opened the season with a perfect 16-game winning streak.
Despite falling short of his first Indian Wells title in a tight two-set loss to Jannik Sinner, Medvedev leaves the ATP Masters 1000 event with his confidence intact.
“Great tournament, good quality, even today,” Medvedev said at a press conference on Sunday. “Yes, I’m disappointed that I didn’t have a few moments when I could have played better. Jannik is a very good player, difficult to play with.
“In general, I’m happy this week and I’m looking forward to more tennis like this.”
Returning to the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time since July, Medvedev has enjoyed a strong revival. He opened the season with a title in Brisbane and returned to the winner’s circle in Dubai before arriving in Indian Wells.
Medvedev’s rival Sinner, who won the final without breaking the eleventh seed, praised the return of ATP No. 1 Club in form.

“I feel like he’s playing amazing tennis,” Sinner said of Medvedev. “He was very confident, having won a few titles this year, coming here and doing very well. He played high quality tennis, very efficient. I found it difficult to come back, especially on the second return.
“I believe tennis needs him. He’s a unique style of play. To see him back at this level, it’s great. He’s improving a lot. A very aggressive player at the end. He has two different styles of play when he’s working and when he’s coming back. So you have to deal with that. It’s great for the sport that he’s playing at this level again.”
Sinner wasn’t the only ATP Tour star to praise the improved version of Medvedev. After the former number 1 defeated Alcaraz in the last four, the Spaniard said, “I have never seen Daniil play like this”.
Medvedev was aiming to become the first player to beat Alcaraz and Sinner in the same tournament since Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals. Medvedev recognizes that challenge of beating two of the Tour’s best players.
“I’m happy that this tournament I played well enough to beat all the other guys first, then I even beat Carlos and then I faced Jannik,” said Medvedev. “That will be my goal, not focusing too much on them, but focusing on improving myself, improving my game, trying to beat all the other guys.
Then, whenever you have Carlos and Jannik in a tournament, there’s a good chance you’ll meet one of them in the semi finals, and if you play unbelievable, then one of them in the final. So that’s the goal, and that’s what I’m going to try to keep doing.”
Reflecting on his past two matches, Medvedev admitted the emotions of beating Alcaraz contrasted with the pain of losing on Sunday.
“Beating Carlos yesterday feels like I won this tournament, especially for me. I lost a lot against him,” said Medvedev. “But that’s not true. There’s a final to play. I had my chance, a little chance in the first set. A bigger chance in the break in the second. But at the same time, I was hanging on a little bit in the whole set.
“That’s right. It’s like a bittersweet feeling where it feels good to do what I did this week.”
