How long should you practice when you go to class?

Welcome to Top 100 Golf Instructors roundtable, where some of the best instructors in the business answer the game’s most pressing questions. The goal? Helping your game and lowering your scores FAST.
So you want to get better at golf? That’s great – it’s time to get to the scope.
There is no substitute for quality workmanship. When you’re under pressure, your swing will revert to whatever it’s best at, so it’s wise to erase your bad habits from the driving range.
The problem with many recreational golfers is that they don’t know how to practice effectively. They just go to the gym and hit the balls without thinking. If you want to get the most out of your workout, however, it’s important to have the right structure. And that starts with knowing how long practice.
So, how much time should you spend grinding on your swing? We asked a group of 100 Top Teachers to weigh in.
How long should you practice?
1. Remember 3 Ts
I tell my students to break down swing practice into three parts, or the 3 T’s: technique, trickery and testing. Focus on development (strategy), photography situations (tactics) and challenge (exploration). That can be 10/10/10 minutes (30 minutes) or whatever your time allows, but stop the routine in those 3Ts. – Martin Chuck
2. Quality over quantity
The duration of your activity is less important than the quality of your attention. A 20-minute focused practice where you pay attention to what you’re doing will benefit you more than 60 minutes of unfocused and distracted practice. Whatever the time, be present and remember what you are doing. — Alison Curdt
3. 30 minutes per skill
It depends on how much time you have! But I usually suggest 30 minute practice sessions in different areas of the game. For example, 30 minutes of full running, 30 minutes of positioning and 30 minutes of recording and other short game. However, if one area needs more attention, steal some time from the power area. — Tim Cooke
4. Don’t worry about height
It’s not how long you practice, but what you do while you practice — and there’s an app for that: Practice Golf Coach. Work on your shot and get the driver straight enough to keep the ball in play. Get the best out of a strong connection with your road pictures. Get accurate with the clubs of the scoring area (9-iron by using wedges). If you can work on putting the line from 4-10 feet that will go a long way to becoming a better putter. Work your way around a clear green strategy for strong communication. — John Dunigan

Frequently Asked Questions About the Power Shift Board How Often Should I Use the Power Change Board in My Training? For best results, we recommend incorporating the Power Shift Board into your regular training routine. Using it for a few minutes each day or as part of your pre-cycle warm-up can greatly improve your swing mechanics and overall performance. When Should I Change My Weight in My Golf Swing? Shift your weight slightly onto the back foot as you swing back, then shift it to the front foot with the swing and impact. Most of the weight should be on the front foot in the follow through, and the back foot on the toe. Timing and fluency are essential. Where Should My Weight Be When I Hit My Driver? When you hit the driver, your weight should start to be evenly distributed or slightly favor your back foot. During the backswing, shift a moderate amount of weight to your back foot. On the descent, shift your weight forward, making sure that when you touch down, most of your weight is on your front foot. This promotes power, a high angle of attack, which is good for driving.
