How solid golf balls changed the game

For nearly 100 years, we’ve played golf balls made from materials not found at Office Depot – or at Cinnabon. Thankfully, a more robust view emerged.

In the mid-1990s, most high-end golf balls featured urethane coatings unlike those used today. Inside there was a middle layer of rubber bands – hence the name “wounds” balls. And inside that was a sack of corn syrup or salt water in the center with yeast or bacteria injected to suppress it. Is it surprising? However, it worked.

In 1994, Bridgestone’s Precept brand introduced the EV Extra Spin, a two-piece, hard ball designed to take the best spin offerings in the category. The pitch: The Extra Spin was long and durable, like a traditional two-piece ball, but with the short game feel needed to compete at the highest level … minus the rubber bands and gooey centers.

For golf balls in particular, travel verification changes the game. Nick Price uses the EV Extra Spin to win that year’s Open Championship and the PGA Championship were the last moments to drop the mic.

The bruises, fluid center balls didn’t disappear overnight: Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters by a record 12 strokes to one. But when Mark O’Meara got his green jacket the following year with a strong Strata – a three-piecer, with a solid middle layer – the corn syrup was drying and the rubber band connection had broken.

In 1999, Titleist introduced its multilayer, solid-core ball: the Pro V1. Maybe you’ve heard of it?
