Liverpool are eyeing Andy Robertson for a move to Tottenham after a late transfer U-turn

Liverpool appear to have surprisingly pulled the plug on a deal that would have seen club legend Andy Robertson join Premier League rivals Tottenham this month.

Despite talks between the two clubs and the player’s apparent willingness to seek a new challenge, the Reds’ management have used the late window for a face.

With the transfer deadline looming on February 2, Liverpool have informed Spurs that their vice-captain is no longer for sale, prioritizing squad depth over the 31-year-old’s transfer fee.

Liverpool make Andy Robertson pass U-turn

Insider Ben Jacobs shared a breakdown of the development at X, explaining that while a move was imminent, Liverpool’s defensive posture made the move more dangerous.

He reveals that Liverpool are considering an offer from Tottenham, worth more than £5 million plus add-ons, and has also explored recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at AS Roma to act as cover for first-choice left-back Milos Kerkez.

However, Arne Slot’s side finally decided against continuing.

Jacobs noted that Robertson remained “professional in all negotiations” and, while he was open to a move to North London, he was not concerned about an exit.

Jacobs wrote:

“Andy Robertson will stay at Liverpool, as it is. Liverpool currently do not feel in a position to sell.

“Exit negotiations are always handled with the interests of Robertson and Liverpool at the forefront of both minds.

“Liverpool have considered an offer from Spurs, which could be worth more than £5m plus add-ons, and have also looked at recalling Kostas Tsimikas, but have decided not to proceed at this time.

“Although a late window move could change things, for now Liverpool are intent on keeping Robertson.

“Robertson has conducted himself professionally in negotiations. Although he is open to Spurs, he has never worried about a move.”

It has been suggested that Liverpool approved Robertson’s move to Tottenham could lay the groundwork for a summer move to Micky van de Ven.

However, with the Reds pulling the plug on the deal, there is a chance the Merseyside club may not be able to secure that advantage during any future negotiations.

Robertson gets the Anfield relegation he deserves

Robertson’s final decision ensures that one of the most decorated players of the modern era will not leave Anfield through the back door in a mid-season deal.

Since joining Hull City in 2017, Robertson has been the heart of Liverpool’s defence, winning every major trophy available.

By keeping him for the final six months of his contract, Liverpool are ensuring that the Anfield fans’ favorite will get the farewell he deserves at the end of the campaign.

With the club still fighting for a top-four finish and European honours, his veteran presence and leadership will be vital, even if he is currently playing second fiddle to Kerkez.

For the Liverpool faithful, seeing their ‘working class hero’ end the season in Red is a most fitting end to his illustrious Merseyside story.
