Red Sox Notes: Anthony, Casas, Crawford

Red Sox fans shielded their eyes Friday while the players were out Roman Anthony again Ceddanne Rafaela collided during a Spring Training game against the Braves. Fortunately, both players avoided serious injury, reports Tim Healey of MassLive.com. “[Anthony is a] really great guy,” said Rafaela. It’s beating hard and … I was hoping you were okay. I was more worried about him than I was about myself, because I saw him in pain, and I don’t like to see my colleagues in those conditions..”
Although Anthony and Rafaela are ready to go, the same cannot be said Places to stay in Triston Casas. The first baseman is recovering from a torn patellar tendon suffered in May. While he is making progress in his recovery, Casas is not a candidate for the Opening Series, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The 26-year-old is currently taking batting practice and participating in practice sessions. His hard work and progress in the camp has earned him praise from the management.
“It’s surprising,” said Cora.He decided to stay here (Fort Myers) at the beginning of the season. The medical team, the coaches, and the strength coaches and health coaches, did an amazing job with him.”
Cotillo added that Casas advancing to the playoffs in Spring Training is still possible. Boston wraps up its spring schedule on March 24 against the Twins.
The Red Sox made a trade Wilson Contreras managing the basic daily tasks. The depth chart is uncertain behind the former Cardinal, however. Romy Gonzalez he made 58 appearances at the position last season, but is likely to miss Opening Day with a shoulder injury. The group aims to provide utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa reps at the beginning of the foundation in the spring. The free agent addition began his career as a catcher and has played eight positions in the majors. The first base is the last one he needs to complete his versatile bingo card. Andrew Monasterioreceived from Caleb Durbin trade, appeared in 20 games at first, though only once as a starter.
On the other hand, both Patrick Sandoval again Cutter Crawford live batting practice on Fridays, per Healey. Crawford missed the entire 2025 campaign while working his way back from a knee injury. Sandoval underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-2024.
Crawford played a combined role in 2022 and 2023, but took over as the full-time starter in 2024. He pitched 183 2/3 innings for a 4.36 ERA. Crawford’s 3.85 xERA and 4.09 SIERA suggest he might be unlucky. The right-hander was supposed to be in the Boston rotation last season, but he hit the IL with right tendinopathy in late March and never returned.
Boston signed Sandoval to a two-year deal last offseason thinking he would be sorely missed or expiring in 2025. The lefty spent all six years of MLB with the Angels. Sandoval came out of the gates throwing harder than ever in 2024, sitting at 93.7 mph with his four-seamer machine. He posted an ERA over 5.00 through 16 starts before going down with an elbow strain in June.
