Matthew Tkachuk Has a “Target-ish” Return Date

The Florida Panthers continue to struggle and remain in the Eastern Conference Playoff race without several key players, including captain Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk. Tkachuk remains sidelined after undergoing surgery to repair a torn hamstring and sports hernia in August 2025, after suffering that injury in February 2025, the same time the Four Nations took place.

Speaking during the first halftime of the Panthers’ game against the Colorado Avalanche, Tkachuk says he will continue to return to the lineup once he has removed his jersey from practice. When he finally returns to the lineup it’s not his call, but he has a date in mind.
“I’m target-ish, it’s always been a way of where we are right now, like we’re on track,” Tkachuk said. “So all the boxes have been checked so far and I think the last one before the game is taking off the No Contact jersey, we’re going to have a few more skates here, and a couple calls to get it there. But we’re feeling a lot better now.”
As previously mentioned, Tkachuk was injured during a tournament representing Team USA. It was a memorable night in Montreal, QC, Canada, with three fights in nine seconds. However, shortly after his return, Tkachuk was unable to finish that match and was severely limited in the Gold Medal match. Team USA lost in overtime against Canada.
Matthew Tkachuk: “There was uncertainty about playing in the Playoffs”
Tkachuk missed the rest of the regular season for the Florida Panthers before returning to the lineup for Game 1 of Round 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, if the Panthers didn’t have a chance to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, Tkachuk might have had surgery right away.
“I mean, I would have gotten the surgery last year, and, you know, in February or March, or whatever, if I didn’t think we had a chance. I think that’s kind of what I signed up for by making the decision in late February or early March, taking it out and finally knowing. I’m sure I lied/lied a few times in the spring, maybe saying I felt good that I needed the surgery, but maybe I was feeling better. Eventually it’s going to have to happen. So I’m not going to change it for you.” world, I’m lucky that our team’s name is on the cup again. It was like that, everything was worth it.”
Tkachuk began practicing with the team in a non-contact jersey shortly after Christmas and participated in the team’s practice before the January 2nd Winter Classic, where the Panthers lost 5-1 to the New York Rangers. While Tkachuk was able to participate in the festivities and drink in the event, he wanted to be there with his teammates.
NHL Rumors: Florida Panthers and Sergei Bobrovsky Slowing Extension Talks
There would be no drama from Paul Maurice during the Winter Classic regarding the possible return of Tkachuk. However, the Panthers are looking at a six-game road trip when this home team ends, and there is a good chance that they will return.
“Even if I’m playing on this six-game road trip, I mean, if it happens, it’s probably towards the end of it, just because I’m still wearing the jersey, but I don’t even have a goal right now, if that’s the case or not,” Tkachuk added. “So it’ll be good to be on the road, do some normal stuff and see myself out there. But hopefully it’s not too long before you see me out there with the boys.”
His preseason games and his Olympic tune-up for Team USA will be the regular season games he enters before the break. Once again, Matthew Tkachuk is following doctors’ orders, even though his patient has been tested, knowing how much he wants to be there.
With Tkachuk ramping up in practice and getting the all-clear from doctors, the Panthers will be a tough team to play against as they march toward a 3-peat.
