NHL Rumors: Could Bobby McMann Get Toronto Maple Leafs First Round Pick?

Could the Toronto Maple Leafs select Bobby McMann in the first round?
Sportsnet: James Mirtle on the JD Bunkis Podcast, when asked if the Toronto Maple Leafs should trade pending UFA forward Bobby McMann, and what they could get for him if they made him available?

Myrtle: “I think it’s very high. You talk to him. You see what’s going on in these games here, and if you feel close enough.
But at a rumored $5 million per season, that makes me nervous. Because I think it’s market value, look at what Bobby McMahon did. I think he’s like a $4 million player. But if you’re going to spend $5 million, you’ve never seen him make the playoffs, I think you’re selling too much.
And I don’t know if you can pick the first round, but you might be able to pick the first round. The only tricky thing about a first-round pick is that not many contenders would want Bobby McMann, a first-round pick, unless he goes to 2027.
Leon Draisaitl Didn’t Say Anything About Edmonton Oilers Play
Bunkis: “What I think is for the Leafs (right??).
Myrtle: “So, yeah, yeah. So maybe that’s it, the talk is that people think he’s worth what the goaltender Sherwood got from, in San Jose when they got him from Vancouver, and that was two second round picks. I think it’s a good trade that the Leafs made.
Bunkis: “I think if you got the first second-round pick in this draft and the second in the next one in Bobby McMahon, you could sign up for that sooner than one first-round pick in 2027.
Myrtle: “Most of the contenders don’t have their first second-round pick, do they? Because their second-round pick will be later in the cycle.”
So, I know it’s wrong. I think he’s trying to get a first round pick. I don’t know if Bobby McMann will do that or not.
Bunkis: “Well, that’s the tricky thing about the Edmonton rumor, isn’t it? Like, everybody already has him in an Oilers uniform. Like he belongs here and they need him. Yeah, right. But Edmonton doesn’t have exactly what Toronto needs.”
The only reason I think McMann has to ask is the price we’re talking about right now, like, what we’ve all raised, that is, you can put him on your team without having to scale back and cut other assets. It’s like you fit easily because of that contract.
Which to me, yes, that, there is, there is real value in that, even if you have to re-sign him. The idea that you can just add him to your team without taking anyone else out is great.
Yes. I mean, the Leafs have all their cap space, and I think whoever trades them, should keep 50% of the deal. And, so for Bobby McMann or Scott Laughton or Simon Benoit, that’s a person who trades, and wants to continue with. Those contracts are suddenly below the league minimum, and they’re easy to get into.
And it’s going to be tough on competing teams with a playoff salary cap. And it will be very important that you get that retention. You get those low numbers. Otherwise, you’ll be sitting on players you don’t want sitting in the playoffs.

So I think that adds some value. And for all the years the Leafs have been paying that extra fourth round pick to keep it up, they should be the beneficiaries this year with the guys being traded.
