Kypreos: “Now, you guys, get the spirit of Kent Hughes in Montreal.”
Justin Bourne: “What part?”
Kypreos: “Regarding, I think he had, they all planned their press conferences for the post-trade deadline, and he was late because he was working on something…”
Bourne: “Yeah, I heard that.”
Kypreos: “… great. Yes, now, and I’m telling you what’s coming out. I’m just telling you what I hear. Okay, there’s a sense at least in my inner world, that the deal he was working on was with the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
NHL Trade Deadline Fallout: Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers
Bourne: “Really. That’s really shocking, considering how rare it is.”
Kypreos: “Okay, that’s where we start salivating now. Okay, what’s going on there?” (asked Sam McKee)
McKee: “Really, I can’t wait for the next words to come out of your mouth. I’m confused here.”
Kypreos: “Now I think Elliotte was the first to report Matthew, Matthew Knies name out there.
Bourne: “So if you’re in Montreal, Matthew Knies makes perfect sense for them. Big, small, you know, a different type of person than they have.”
Kypreos: “I can tell you that his name has been around with a lot of teams. Okay, that’s the name. And if that’s the case, if you really, really think about it, without (Auston) Matthews and (William) Nylander not moving, who would have been out there providing :ears with top, top talent.”
Bourne: “That’s right, it’s Knies.”
Kypreos: “Yes, Knies. And again, I’m not sure that, that, was…”
Bourne: “Only in other words, (Easton) Cowan, and that would be.”
Kypreos: “I’m not guaranteeing anything. I’m just telling you, that’s the word, and that’s the feeling that’s going on this week that if something about Kent Hughes happens, a lot of people point to him at the Leafs.”
Bourne: “And it would have been, it would have been the Leafs back.”
Kypreos: “Yes.”
Bourne: “So, Kaiden Guhle, and…”
Kypreos: “Yeah, whatever it is, whatever it is, they have a ton, a ton.”
Bourne: “Yeah, they got that Hage kid on the way.”
Kypreos: “They’ve got a lot. And that’s one guy you, if, if (Leafs GM Brad) Treliving works something out with the Knies, he’s the one guy who can give you that kind of return.”
Bourne: “You wonder, if it wasn’t for Montreal, if it would have happened, I wonder if, if your (Treliving), the fear of giving Montreal a player that puts them at the top, you know, that, the light wouldn’t shine more than that trade.
McKee: “It’s one thing to trade Thomas Plekanec to the Leafs for one playoff spot, or, as a trivial matter, I can’t even think of another trade they’ve ever made. But to trade one of your guys who seems to be important with a long contract, the first year of a long contract, or that contract is signed…”
Kypreos: “$7.5 (million)”
McKee: “…seven more years of being on a rival team? Yeah, I mean.”
Kypreos: “But you can turn it into the next two or three chips, right? That could turn out to be a very important person as Knies develops. And that’s the word of the trade deadline, guys.”
Bourne: “This is what Leafs fans are frustrated about, they wanted to see it shake.
Kypreos: “Something like that…”
Bourne: “It’s still possible.”
Kypreos: “It’s still possible. Absolutely. And I think Kent Hughes, when he talked about something so big that he was working on, I think he relied on it being possible, it could be retaken.”
NHL Rumors: What Is The Future Of Auston Matthews And The Toronto Maple Leafs?
Bourne: “I think he made a joke like, one day I’ll tell you over a beer or something like that to whoever he was talking to. I’d heard those quotes myself.”
