The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking at the defenseman trade market
OverDrive: Darren Dreger and Jonas Siegel to the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a defenseman. Winnipeg Jets defenseman Luke Schenn could be a less expensive option, but he should get a look. Rasmus Andersson? They have limited trading assets, and does it make sense?

Bryan Hayes: “Yeah, again, things that hurt, they have to affect the room, right?
Siegel: “Bonkers.”
Hayes: “And, you know, like, (Chris) Tanev, who knows. (Anthony) Solarz, who knows? Like, those are big pieces, right? Like, how do the Leafs navigate this?”
NHL Injuries: Ducks, Flames, Oilers, Penguins, Blues, Lightning, Leafs, Golden Knights, Capitals and more
Dreger: “They wanted a defender, I mean, it was, you know,
months.”
Hayes: “As a man of influence, or, as a serious man.”
Dreger: “Very good availability. I mean, there are, there are deep pieces available. I mean, look what the Winnipeg Jets are doing right now, right?
I’m sure if the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to draft Luke Schenn, they got him a low draft pick. And I think Luke wants a better opportunity, a bigger role. I mean, we can be thankful for being given where he is in his career, and I mean, this is a great honor for Luke. Because, well, granted, he’s not, he’s never been fast, but he’s slow now. But, man, he’s still an easy, smart, tough defender. You know you have that personality in that room, no matter how many minutes you play.
But yeah, I mean, Brad Treliving has to go straight up. And how high? Again, that depends on what they ask for in return. That’s where they struggle.”
Jeff O’Neill: “Jonas, you’re like winning.”
Siegel: “Well, because I wrote about this , and I talked about Schenn. I think it makes sense, because of the price.
And may they be better defenders. Rasmus Andersson is the best defender, obviously. But I don’t know, I don’t think they have the equipment to get a better defender.”
O’Neill: “They have zero assets.”
Siegel: “Well, they don’t have assets. Like, you can trade Easton Cowan, if you want. You can trade Ben Danford. They have a 2027 second rounder, which is cool. Like, they don’t have anything, but other teams have better assets.”
Hayes: “That’s right.”
Siegel: “You know what I mean.”
NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs, and Soft Deadline
Hayes: “Yeah, sure. So that question, like, and, yeah, I mean, what’s your team right now, too? Like Trelivings has to think about that. You know, it’s like, if you’re in Colorado, you’re like, yeah, we’re in it to win it. This seems like, the Leafs aren’t in the playoffs right now.”
O’Neill: “What are you going to do, use this? It’s not even clear what you are…”
Hayes: “Yeah, sure. Let’s say you go get Rasmus Andersson. Let’s say that’s the guy.”
Siegel: “Yeah, and let’s say it takes all your best stuff, Cowan, Danford and the picks…”
Dreger: “It’s only obvious if you get them in an extension.”
Siegel: “And then it’s like, your thing. Like, should you extend this guy?”
Dreger: “Why?”
Siegel: “Well, your defense is old. You’ll be 30 in…”
Dreger: “You can do that again in the offseason, right?
Siegel: “Can you?”
Dreger: “Yes, I understand.”
Siegel: “But, yeah, it’s a fair question, you’re stretching it. Like, is that, is that a right to move them?
all your things.”
Hayes: “Me, to me it doesn’t feel like the right time for that. I’d give him 10 or 15 more games, personally.”
Dreger: “Fair. Fair.”
NHL Rumors: Interest in Calgary Flames Defenseman Rasmus Andersson
Hayes: “You know, like me, I know they’ve been playing better lately. Good for them. They’re in a better position right now. I’m not making a play where I’m pouring everything I’ve got.”
Dreger: “No.”
Hayes: “Personally, and you know where I stand on this like Jonas, I think at some point they have to reach, they have to reload and rebuild, the farm system. Like you have to have young players.”
Dreger: “Not much for the Marlies.”
