Odyssey introduces new 1/2 Ball alignment aid with Ai-Dual putters

Odyssey has always been a leader in alignment technology, going back more than 20 years with their first 2-ball putter.
Now the company is adding another option to its lineup with the new 1/2 Ball alignment aid in the Ai-Dual putter line.
“When you look down at address, you want something that slides where you don’t see a break,” Callaway VP of Product Strategy Jacob Davidson told GOLF. “Half the ball on the putter, and the actual ball – it all comes together. That opens up this tension and freedom where everything just lines up perfectly, and subconsciously, your brain just lets go.”
The new Ai-Dual line includes the company’s Ai-Dual, which was first used in the S2S Tri-Hot line, and has six traditional models and four Square 2 Square models. Six new putters are available with new 1/2 Ball alignment support

What’s new with Odyssey Ai-Dual putters – and why you should care
Technology that needs no explanation
The 2-ball alignment aid has been part of the Odyssey line for years, and it shows how much better people aim with the ball framed and centered on the center of the putter face. One drawback, Davidson admitted, is that it can be a little overwhelming for some.
In the new Ai-Dual system, Odyssey engineers set out to create a new system that was simple and did the same thing as the 2-ball. That’s where the new 1/2 Ball comes in.

“Once you see it, you can’t unsee it,” Davidson said. “You don’t have to explain to the buyer. The light bulb is on.”
That happened when Akshay Bhatia became the first player to use the new alignment aid on the PGA Tour when he switched to the Ai-Dual Jailbird 1/2 Ball Cruiser Broomstick at the Procore Championship last fall.
“They went out for a practice round on Wednesday and he had his coach and his manager watching him line up all the putts, and the alignment based on the starting line of where he was going was very different,” Davidson said. “He liked the forward roll, the insert, the feel of the insert, but the alignment technology was the big thing.”
The first two rounds of Akshay Bhatia’s new Odyssey Ai-Dual Jailbird Cruiser 1/2-Ball broomstick putter seem to be going well.

And while the technology needs no explanation, Callaway worked with two college professors at Baylor and Clemson to prove how effective the alignment aid was. With more than 1,000 putts hit by 52 testers, players made more than 10 percent of their putts from six feet with the help of the 1/2 Ball alignment.
Enter the same, big stage
The namesake of the Ai-Dual insert actually made its second appearance on the Odyssey putter. It was first released in the S2S Tri-Hot line, but will now be widely available in Odyssey’s flagship line.

The insert consists of two layers of urethane with a soft outer layer and a hard inner layer molded with artificial intelligence to control ball speed. While there isn’t a window to view the back of the insert like the Ai-ONE line, you can see the contours on the underside of the insert under the putter.
As with the Tri-Hot, the insert is paired with deep and powerful Forward Roll Design grooves to provide a consistent forward roll across the face.
S2S Updates
There are three options for Square 2 Square with shape No. 7, Jailbird and S2S Max. While Tri-Hot introduced lower torques without shaft lean, the new Ai-Dual options still have shaft lean, albeit reduced from 3.3˚ to 2˚ from the Ai-ONE Square 2 Square models.
“In the last 18 months, 40 percent of the market said, ‘We don’t care about shaft lean. We bought it. We like it,'” Davidson said.

For standard length models, Odyssey has created a new reverse taper grip, which eliminates that shaft tilt. While other manufacturers use straight taper offset grips on their low torque with a lean shaft, the Odyssey version has a standard upper hand, which makes the grip feel natural.
The S2S models will also come with a black SL120 shaft that is heavier than the silver SL90 shaft in the entire Ai-Dual lineup. That came directly from the tour response as players were asking for lower torque models with heavier shafts to stabilize the stroke. The black shaft is also not too disturbed by center-shaft positioning.

My take: Alignment means everything
Your putter is only as good as you can point it and Odyssey has always taken that message to heart.
The big message with the new Ai-Dual system is the 1/2 ball alignment advantage, which looks much better than the 2-Ball in my mind and accomplishes the same thing.
When it comes to the Odyssey system, the Double Wide is my favorite shape and going back and forth between the regular version and the new 1/2 Ball version has been fun to see how much better I can focus on the ball. We’ve seen more subtle examples of this concept, but the Odyssey version is simple and easy to use.
That’s the whole point of alignment technology, too. What good is it if you have to explain to someone what it is and what it does?
The new line is also another example of complimenting the Ai-Dual entry with a more advanced feel than the Ai-ONE. The Ai-Dual feels soft, but there’s still enough sound to get the response most players want. I think this could be the first Odyssey put to compete with Microhinge for dominance on the PGA Tour.
