One of the best ways to practice putting is to use a long putter

You may have noticed that more and more professional golfers are using broomstick putters these days. But this mechanical trend isn’t just helping top golfers sink clutch putts. These extra long putters can also help players like you create a smooth, reliable stroke.
According to GOLF Top 100 Alumni Scott Munroe, broomstick putter is more than just a reliable player — it’s also a practical training aid. The reason it’s such a powerful tool, Munroe says, is that it gets the hands out of the way.
“What it does is make you move your shoulders, put your hands out [of the movement],” Munroe said.
The key is the extended shaft. Because broomstick putters have a higher point of rotation in the body, they naturally encourage you to move the putter with your large muscles – rather than the smaller, moving muscles in your hands and wrists. This results in a pendulum-like beat that is consistent and sensitive to emotions.
Bend your elbows to mimic that broomstick feel
Don’t have access to a broomstick putter? Don’t worry. Munroe says there’s an easy way to recreate the feel and impact of a broomstick putter:
Step 1. Set your hands: Place your hands on the club with your fingers under the grip.
Step 2. Create a pentagon: Raise the putter in front of you. This should cause your arms to form a pentagon.
Step 3. Close your elbows: Pull your elbows to touch your body.
Now, put the putter back down and set up as if you were going to hit the putt. To start with the swing of the exercise, start moving the club back and forth, focusing on using your core muscles.
“What you’re doing is remaking the long putter,” he said. “When you get out of this position, all you do is move your shoulders. That will help you position.”
Once you feel comfortable with this pendulum-like movement, you can start incorporating the ball into your workout. Pay attention to how the ball rolls as you use the Munroe drill. If you do it right and use those big muscles, the ball should roll into the end every time.
Even if you’ve never thought about adding one to your bag, practicing with a broomstick putter – or simulating it with a Munroe elbow drill – can be the key to unlocking better mechanics and making your putts roll more realistically, especially under pressure.
