NHL rumors: Minnesota Wild went all Quinn Hughes. Can they keep him?
While Gew Gm Blity Guerin went “all – in” to find big brother Hughes, the real work now begins. Remember, Hughes has a year and a half left on his current contract for $7.85 million. He is not eligible to sign an extension until July 1, 2026, but the way he spoke after the game on Sunday, he is open to anything.
Hughes told Minnesota: “It’s a very open mind,” Hugnenes said with an open mind, after the post-game when asked if he was about to extend the toilet. “They have an amazing core. Obviously I’ve only had four hours, but I know some of the guys that they’re Minnesota’s powerhouse and they’re so close to Michigan (the closest hockey position to the men.”
But what may have put things over the edge was another segment where he praised the Minnesota general manager for crossing over and following him.
“And obviously I got a lot of time for Billy by bet ‘n making a deal like he did. And he just loved me,” Hughes continued. “There are other teams that might be thrown into some pockets like that, but at the end of the day, they didn’t want to trade that or three on their team like Billy did.”
NHL Trade: Vancouver Canucks Trade Quinn Hughes to Minnesota
How the players are handled in this situation goes a long way to whether the players stay or not. Vancouver Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford treated Quinn Hughes as having trade protection even though he did not. Hughes had ryan o’reilly unofficial-official mouth protection. Not only was the player informed throughout the process, but his agent, Pat Brisson, was.
Brisson, who cannot confirm the teams or anything before the trade, will keep an open mind and his player after this report when it comes to his contract, as he told Michael Russo of sports.
“We never crossed that,” Brisson said. “Like the conversations I had in recent weeks about possible extensions and not hoping for anything, we have never looked or thought in a forward-thinking way.
The good thing about Quinn, he’s still young. He is not 29- or 30-year-old material. I’m not saying it’s old, but because of the expansion, sometimes it’s often your last deal, right? So with him, I don’t know – everything is open. We’re definitely going into this experience with an open mind, and we’ll see how it goes. “
