The Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Calgary Flames

Will Mason Marchment Stay in Columbus Longer?
The Columbus Blue Jackets made a surprise trade Friday night, just before the Holiday Roster Freeze, acquiring Mason Marchment from the Seattle Kraken for two draft picks (the second in 2027 and the fourth in 2026.
This comes on the heels of quarterback Zach Werenski leaving after Thursday night’s loss, telling reporters, “Enough is enough.” Werenski was fed up with his team’s poor success and felt that the club should be better than its current record and standings.
NHL Rumors: Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, and Dallas Stars
Now, did GM Don Waddell do this in direct response to Werenski’s comments? Probably not, but the Blue Jackets needed a goal after failing to score. Regarding Marchment’s extension, Waddell plans to speak with Marchment’s agent, Paul Capizzano, to see where things stand, according to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.
“I spoke to the agent shortly after we made the deal. We agreed: let’s find out if the player likes it. And if he likes it and fits in well here, then we can talk about it.”
Marchment is taking a wait-and-see approach to see if he wants to expand in Columbus. So far, so good with three goals in his first games with the club.
Rasmus Andersson Makes Statement About Future in Calgary
During the After Hours Segment on Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada with Scott Oake and Eric Francis, Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson joined the show and was asked about his future with the organization.
“Well, it’s frozen for now. So I can breathe easy these past few days. But I mean, honestly, what can I say, really? I mean, we all know my contract situation; nothing’s changed from the summer until now.”
“And you know, Elliott likes to say that I go back and forth, but I haven’t thought about anything but playing well for the Flames and so far so good. I mean, I don’t, I mean, I just, sometimes I just laugh when I read that I don’t make my own decisions and stuff like that. And yeah, it’s funny to me, and it’s fun.
Andersson has been the topic of conversation since last season, when teams tried to acquire his services. Those teams are still looking for them as the season continues. The right-handed defenseman was eligible to sign an extension with the Flames through July 1, 2025. While the Flames would like to re-sign him, they would like to do so on their own terms and may not go as long as Andersson would like.
NHL Rumors: Trade Interest in Rasmus Andersson Should Begin in January
When asked by Scott Oake if this decision depends on him and if he will choose to stay with the Calgary Flames, Andersson made an interesting comment about those discussions.
“I mean, the old saying goes, it takes two to tango, right? And, it’s, yeah, I mean, obviously I’m loving every second of my time playing for the Flames. And I’ve enjoyed it all, now I’ve been in the organization for almost 11 years. And I loved every second of it. But let’s just leave it at that, It takes two to tango. “
This will be a situation to watch as the Holiday Roster Freeze lifts, and we head into the Olympic Break.
