The former Players champion has a simple trick to making more putts

Cameron Smith’s victory at the 2022 Players Championship was, above all, a masterclass. Sure, his aggressive approach to 17 greens grabbed the headlines, but in the end, it was his accuracy on the greens that won him over.

That week’s statistics made his green power even more apparent. Throughout the tournament, Smith gained 11.5 strokes from the field with his putter alone. In the final round, he needed just 24 putts to get the job done.

But it wasn’t just a hot week for Smith. Careers like that are built over time — with thousands of hours perfecting the stroke, honing green-reading skills, and for Smith, relying on a key principle any golfer can use to perform better on the green: visualization.

How Cam Smith uses blue vision

Last August at LIV Golf Chicago, Smith walked us through his putting program. At first, it seemed like a straightforward three-step process. But as he described each piece, it became clear to visualize the common thread that connected everything.

Here’s how his process breaks down:

Step 1. Smith starts by placing his putter face where he wants to aim

Step 2. Next, he puts his body.

Step 3. Finally, Smith looks for the line and dunks a few more times, then takes one last look to see the ball roll off the front of the cup.

Although it’s easy on the surface, there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. Throughout his process, Smith is constantly visualizing how the ball will roll on his chosen line and react to the conditions on the green. And for him, visualization begins when he begins his pre-shoot process.

“When I set my putter, I like to see the ball kind of go down the line,” Smith said, “then when I set my body, I’m more focused on the ball rolling forward. [of the cup].”

Where it all really comes together is that last look before he pulls the trigger. In fact, it seems to be a very important part of his routine.

During this last look, the mental vision clears up—it even acts as a sign that you’re ready to go. With line and speed clearly visible, you can return the club with complete confidence.

“This is the last look, I really see the ball rolling in front, then I come back and it keeps going,” he said.

It makes sense that Smith is a good putter, after all, he already “saw” the putt go in before he returned the putter.

It’s a lesson that aspiring players at any level can learn from. By building a consistent routine and taking the time to visualize each putt, you can build confidence and turn a good lesson into a great putt—before the ball leaves the face.
