The New York Rangers will not offer Artemi Panarin a contract extension
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: The New York Rangers have issued a statement that they will be reworking and not rebuilding. GM Chris Drury met with their team leaders individually, and then the team as a whole, according to sources.
Sources added that Artemi Panarin was told he would not receive an extension from the Rangers, and that they would work with his agent, Paul Theofanous, to facilitate a trade, if possible, wherever he would like to go.

Johnston: “Well, Panarin, the Rangers are getting closer and closer to the day, I mean, they’re at the bottom of the conference as we record this, where they’re going to have to, you know, I think they’re fully committed to being salespeople.

Panarin has full control here, so there is still a conversation that needs to happen with his agent and where he can play. But you know, you can start looking for reasonable places. You know, places maybe where there are other Russian players. You know, he’s, he’s got to be the most impactful player, you know, that’s available, or expected to be available.
But, you know, it’s hard to know what he’s going to want. Would he, would he want to continue? Does he just play this and go straight to free agency? I mean, that’s still not clear at all. I don’t, I don’t think Rangers have fully sold them yet. But obviously, the hawks are circling a bit. That it’s very clear that the Rangers, you know, just had a rough season there, and they need to kind of reboot themselves, so to speak.
And then, you know, I don’t think, you know, any contract talks that I had with Panarinn didn’t go anywhere very quickly at the beginning of the season. So it is not possible at this time the extension is coming. And he, he will get another big money, I believe.
And so, you know, that’s, kind of where things stand. Only he knows where he can play this season. Like when he could stop trading. And I think that will come to more clarity as time goes on.

Johnston: “Yes, I meant, like other people, that seagulls circle, not just any.

Thanks for that point of clarification. Yes, seagulls circle. They see food down there on the beach, and it’s like, Well, can we go over there and get some of that? So I would not associate them with that.
