Jannik Sinner is one step away from making ATP Masters 1000 history at the Miami Open presented by Iau.

The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings tied Novak Djokovic for most consecutive sets won at the Masters 1000 level (24) with his 6-3, 6-3 opening-round victory over Damir Dzumhur on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. Even with all the ATP Tour icons who have competed at the Masters 1000 level since the category was created in 1990, the 24-year-old Sinner is on the verge of putting together an unprecedented winning streak.

Sinner’s perfect Masters 1000 run, in which he lost an average of more than three games per set and had four wins against Top 10 opponents, began with his victory at November’s Rolex Paris Masters. After marching to the title in France without dropping a set, the Italian did it again at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this month. Now, he has a chance to move away from Djokovic by winning the first set of the third round in Miami against 30th seed Corentin Moutet.

Like Sinner’s streak so far, Djokovic who won 24 sets, at the start of 2016, also came away with two trophies. Djokovic who was then World No. 1 started his second round win over Bjorn Fratangelo in Indian Wells, where he went on to win the trophy without dropping another set. He followed that up by completing the ‘Sunshine Double’ (for a record fourth) in Miami, where he went undefeated. The top-seeded Serbian reached the final in his opening match at that year’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, losing to Jiri Vesely 4-6, 6-2, 4-6.

The hard courts of the BNP Paribas Open also featured the third and fourth longest sets to win the series. Carlos Alcaraz put together a brilliant run to victory at Indian Wells in 2023 and extended his streak to 21 straight sets until Sinner met to beat the Spaniard in the final in Miami. In 2014, Djokovic’s 19-set winning streak, which began with a successful run to the Paris-Bercy title last year, came to an end when Roger Federer took the first set in the Indian Wells final. Djokovic however turned that game around to claim the trophy in the California desert.

The longest streak of winning the Masters 1000 to include any action forms the effort of Andy Murray in 2016: The Briton has won 18 in a row since the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, where he won without dropping a set. In his next Masters 1000 appearance, on the hard courts at the Cincinnati Open, Murray powered through four more straight-set wins before falling to Marin Cilic in the championship match.
